What is HAP?
The Jesuit Higher Achievement Program at Xavier is a five-week academic enrichment program for public and private school young men who have successfully finished the seventh grade. Now in its 40th year, the Xavier HAP incorporates the study of mathematics, reading, and English with athletics and cultural experiences to develop young men who are academically excellent and open to growth.
High School Preparation
HAP students receive a glimpse of the demanding expectations of a college preparatory school like Xavier. The majority of the HAP faculty are teachers at Xavier and about 30 Xavier students volunteer as tutors. Toward the end of the program, each student will take a comprehensive exam in math and English. In addition to reading, English, and math, HAP students choose from a long list of elective courses that meet twice per week. Each teacher designs a class around a topic he or she is passionate about; the focus is on fun and curiosity. In the past, electives such as art, physical fitness, photography, chess, and HAP newspaper have been offered. Participation in HAP does not guarantee admission to Xavier High School, but it does help the student gain familiarity with Xavier’s academic program.
Trips
Every homeroom will be scheduled to go on three trips over the course of the program. By taking advantage of the terrific educational and cultural resources around New York City, we hope to expose our students to new experiences and broaden their perspectives. Over the years, HAP trips have included journeys to the New York Hall of Science, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the American Museum of Natural History.
Sports
Each regular class day, homerooms participate in intramural sports. HAP intramurals are competitive, but our emphasis is on fun and personal development. We do not keep records and all students are expected to participate in every game. Showing good sportsmanship to opponents, teammates, and referees is the highest priority.
How do I apply?
Because Xavier would like the young men to be recommended for admission by their elementary school, applications for HAP can only be obtained through the school in which the young man is currently enrolled. Once recommended, each applicant must:
1) Complete the HAP application and essay.
2) Submit a copy of his most recent report card.
3) Submit a completed medical form.
Tuition & Donations
40 years ago, Xavier’s HAP began with the goal of providing an opportunity for young men to develop their academic skills in an environment that promotes a love of learning. At the same time, the character of a Jesuit education calls us to be committed to social justice in a way that extends opportunity to all. Therefore, there is no tuition for HAP. Our hope is to allow students from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences to participate in HAP, regardless of their financial situation.
Xavier High School and the New York Province of the Society of Jesus spend approximately $300 to educate each HAP student. We depend on the generosity of the families of HAP students to keep the program running. We ask each family to make a donation to assure that the program will continue to serve the young men of New York. We deeply appreciate every donation, large or small.
